Idle Air Control Valve: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Lubricate the IAC valve seal with clean engine oil.
  2. Install the IAC valve into the throttle body. Install a NEW IAC valve screw and tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  3. Connect the IAC valve harness connector.
  4. Install air cleaner outlet resonator, air cleaner intake duct and vent hose.
  5. Reset the IAC valve pintle using the following procedure:
    • Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with the engine off.
    • Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 10 seconds.
    • Start the engine and check for proper idle operation.


CAUTION: The IAC valve may be damaged if installed with the cone (pintle) extended more than 1-1/8" (28 mm). Measure the distance that the valve is extended before installing a new valve. The distance from the idle air control valve motor housing to the end of the idle air control valve pintle should be less than 1-1/8" (28 mm). Manually compress the pintle until the extension is less than 1-1/8" (28 mm).
  1. Install the NEW Idle Air Control (IAC) valve "O" ring.
  2. Install the IAC valve into the throttle body. See Figure .
  3. Install the IAC valve attaching screws. Tighten the screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Connect the IAC harness connector. See Figure .
  5. Position the EVAP canister purge valve on the intake manifold.
  6. Install the EVAP canister purge valve retaining bolt. Tighten the purge valve retaining bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Connect the purge valve harness connector.
  8. Connect the canister purge valve pipe and the vacuum supply hose.
  9. Install the accelerator cable bracket to the throttle body. See Figure .
  10. Install the nuts and bolts. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Connect the accelerator cable into the accelerator cable bracket.
  12. Connect the accelerator cable cross slug to the throttle body slots. See Figure .
