Test M: Air Bag Indicator Does Not Illuminate: Testing

  1. If air bag system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If air bag system diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  in SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position while observing AIR BAG indicator. If AIR BAG indicator does not illuminate, go to next step. If AIR BAG indicator illuminates, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  3. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM in AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS. Disconnect SDM Yellow 34-pin harness connector. Connect a fused (3-amp) jumper wire between ground and SDM harness connector terminal A9 (Brown wire). See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If AIR BAG indicator remains off, go to next step. If AIR BAG indicator does not remain off, go to step  5 .

  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Check for open or high resistance in Brown wire (air bag indicator control signal) between SDM harness connector A9 and IPC harness connector terminal A16. If Brown wire is okay, go to step  6 . If Brown wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  5. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect jumper wire. Check SDM connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step  7 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  6. Check IPC connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step  8 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  7. Replace SDM. After repair, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace IPC. After repair, go to next step.
  9. Reconnect all SIR components. Ensure all component, connectors and CPAs are properly mounted. Go to AIR BAG SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
