Test I: Range Selector Display Inoperative Or Displays Incorrect Range (4L80E Diesel): Testing

  1. Review Transmission Range (TR) switch description. See DESCRIPTION  . Go to next step.
  2. Place transmission gear selector in Park position. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Shift transmission gear selector into each gear position. Monitor and record transmission range indication displayed in each gear position. If PRNDL does not indicate the correct gear in each position, go to next step. If PRNDL indicate the correct gear in each position, problem may be intermittent. Try to recreate fault by wiggling wiring and connectors. Check for faulty connections at all connectors that may be causing intermittent condition.
  3. Verify all PRNDL indicators operate. If any PRNDL indicators are inoperative, go to next step. If all PRNDL indicators operate properly, go to step  6 .
  4. Check for open, high resistance or short to ground in Pink wire (off/run/crank voltage circuit) between IPC harness connector terminal B10 and TRANS fuse (10-amp) in instrument panel fuse block. If circuit is okay, go to next step. If circuit is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  5. Check for open or high resistance in Black wire (PNP switch ground circuit) between ground and PNP switch harness connector C1 terminal "D". If Black wire is okay, go to next step. If Black wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  17 .
  6. Disconnect PNP switch Natural 4-pin harness connector C2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage between ground and PNP switch harness connector terminal "A" (Black/White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  11 .
  7. Measure voltage between ground and PNP switch harness connector terminal "C" (White wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  12 .
  8. Measure voltage between ground and PNP switch harness connector terminal "D" (Yellow wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  13 .
  9. Measure voltage between ground and PNP switch harness connector terminal "B" (Gray wire). If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, go to step  14 .
  10. With ignition switch in RUN position, ground inoperative PRNDL indicator transmission range switch circuit terminal. If inoperative PRNDL indicators do no illuminate, go to step  15 . If inoperative PRNDL indicators illuminate, go to step  16 .
  11. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Black/White wire between PNP switch and IPC. After repair, go to step  17 .
  12. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in White wire between PNP switch and IPC. After repair, go to step  17 .
  13. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Yellow wire between PNP switch and IPC. After repair, go to step  17 .
  14. Repair open, high resistance or short to ground in Gray wire between PNP switch and IPC. After repair, go to step  17 .
  15. Replace IPC. After repair, go to step  17 .
  16. Replace PNP. Adjust as necessary. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH  under ADJUSTMENTS. After repair, go to next step.
  17. Operate system to verify fault no longer exists. If fault still exists, go to step  2 .
