Test B: Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Inaccurate Or Inoperative

- If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If IPC diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Monitor ECT parameter in PCM engine data 1 list. If ECT parameter does not match engine coolant temperature gauge display, go to next step. If ECT parameter matches engine coolant temperature gauge display, check for intermittent or poor connections.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge sensor Blue 2-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If ECT gauge displays 100°F (37°C) or less, go to next step. If ECT gauge displays more than 100°F (37°C), go to step 6 .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect Signal Generator And Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431-C) between ground and ECT gauge sensor harness connector Dark Green wire terminal. Using a DVOM to verify signal generator and instrument panel tester resistance settings, adjust tester to 50 ohms. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If engine coolant temperature gauge indicates less than 260°F (127°C), go to next step. If engine coolant temperature gauge indicates 260°F (127°C) or more, go to step 7 .
- Check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Dark Green wire between ECT gauge sensor harness connector and IPC harness connector terminal B9. If Dark Green wire is okay, go to step 9 . If Dark Green wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check for short to ground in Dark Green wire between ECT gauge sensor harness connector and IPC harness connector terminal B9. If Dark Green wire is okay, go to step 9 . If Dark Green wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check ECT gauge sensor case ground for intermittent or poor contact. If case ground is okay, go to next step. If case ground is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check ECT gauge sensor connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step 10 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check IPC connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step 11 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace ECT gauge sensor. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace IPC. After repair, go to next step.
- Operate system to verify fault no longer exists. If fault still exists, go to step 2 .
