Blower Motor Noise Diagnosis

NOTE: Definition: Noise originating from the blower motor.
  1. Were you sent here from SYMPTOM DIAGNOSIS  or another diagnostic table? If so, go to next step. If not, see TROUBLE SHOOTING .
  2. Sit inside the vehicle. Close the vehicle doors and windows. Turn ignition on. Cycle the blower motor through all of the speeds and modes in order to determine where and when the noise occurs. Is a noise evident during the blower operation? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  10.
  3. Does the noise vary with the blower speed? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  10.
  4. Inspect for excessive vibration at each blower motor speed by feeling the blower case. Is excess vibration present? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  6.
  5. Remove the appropriate blower motor. See AUXILIARY BLOWER MOTORS  or BLOWER MOTOR (FRONT)  in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Inspect the blower motor for deposits of foreign material. Did you find any foreign material on the blower motor? If so, go to step  7. If not, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the blower motor for the following conditions:
    • Cracked blades.
    • A loose impeller retainer.
    • Improper impeller alignment.
    Did you find any of these conditions? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to step  9.
  7. Remove the foreign material. After repairs are complete, go to step  10.
  8. Replace the appropriate blower motor. See BLOWER MOTOR (FRONT)  or AUXILIARY BLOWER MOTORS  in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs are complete, go to step  10.
  9. Install the appropriate blower motor. See BLOWER MOTOR (FRONT)  or AUXILIARY BLOWER MOTORS  in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repairs, go to next step.
  10. Operate the system in order to verify the repair. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If system still malfunctions, return to step  2.
