Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Is engine running rough or stalling? If yes, go to step  5. If no, go to next step.
  3. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 30 seconds. Start engine. Run engine at idle for one minute. Did a DTC P1692 set? If yes, go to step  7. If no, go to next step.
  4. Operate vehicle within freeze frame conditions as specified. Did a DTC P1692 set? If yes, go to step  9. If no, see INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES - 1.8L VIBE article.
  5. Disconnect harness connector of rocker arm oil control solenoid. Start engine. Is engine still running rough or stalling? If yes, go to step  11. If no, go to next step.
  6. Check for a short to voltage or a short to ground in electrical circuits of rocker arm oil control solenoid. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct a condition? If yes, go to step  15. If no, go to step  16.
  7. Disconnect harness connector of rocker arm oil pressure switch. Measure resistance of rocker arm oil pressure switch. Is resistance less than 3 ohms? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  13.
  8. Check for an open in input circuit of rocker arm oil pressure switch. Check for poor electrical connections at rocker arm oil pressure switch or PCM. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct a condition? If yes, go to step  15. If no, go to next step.
  9. Remove rocker arm oil control solenoid. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, engine OFF. Connect rocker arm oil control solenoid to battery voltage and ground with a pair of fused jumper wires. Observe movement of solenoid plunger when voltage is applied and removed. Does solenoid plunger extend to 0.125" (3 mm) when voltage is applied and then retract smoothly when voltage is removed? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  12.
  10. Check for an intermittent short to voltage or short to ground in electrical circuits of rocker arm oil control solenoid. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct a condition? If yes, go to step  15. If no, go to step  14.
  11. Check for a restriction or blockage in the oil return passage of rocker arm oil control system. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct a condition? If yes, go to step  15. If no, go to next step.
  12. Replace rocker arm oil control solenoid valve. After repair, go to step  15.
  13. Replace rocker arm oil pressure switch. After repair, go to step  15.
  14. Replace PCM. After repair, go to next step.
  15. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  16. Using scan tool, observe stored information, CAPTURE INFO. Does scan tool display any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
