Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  or until the HO2S heater test is complete. Did a DTC P0135 or P0141 set? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
  3. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine OFF. Disconnect harness connector of the HO2S that failed the diagnostic. Using a test light connected to ground, probe ignition positive voltage circuit, on the engine harness side. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  8.
  4. Turn ignition switch to RUN position, with engine OFF. Using a test light connected to battery positive, probe the heater control circuit on the engine harness side. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to step  6. If no, go to next step.
  5. Start and idle the engine. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to step  9. If no, go to step  7.
  6. Check the HO2S heater control circuit for a short to ground. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to step  11.
  7. Check for an open in HO2S heater control circuit. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to step  11.
  8. Check for an open in the ignition feed circuit. Repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  12.
  9. Check electrical connections at HO2S for poor connection. Repair as necessary. Was a repair necessary? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to step  11.
  10. Replace HO2S. After repair, go to step  12.
  11. Replace PCM. After repair, go to step  12.
  12. Use scan tool to clear DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate vehicle within CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  or until HO2S Heater test is complete. Does DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2.
  13. With a scan tool, observe stored information, CAPTURE INFO. Does scan tool display any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay at this time.
