- Perform instrument panel cluster system diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If instrument panel cluster system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
- Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor ENGINE SPEED parameter in PCM data list. If ENGINE SPEED parameter and tachometer display agree, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections or damaged wires. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS . After repair, go to 4 . If ENGINE SPEED parameter and tachometer display do not agree, go to next step.
- Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION and go to next step.
- Check tachometer operation. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If problem still exists, return to step 2 .
