Test Q: Speedometer Gauge &/Or Odometer Inoperative Or Inaccurate

  1. Perform instrument panel cluster system diagnostic system check. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. If instrument panel cluster system diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step.
  2. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Raise and support vehicle sufficiently for drive wheels to rotate. Start engine and place gear selector in Drive. Using scan tool, monitor VSS parameter in PCM ENGINE data list. If VSS parameter and speedometer display agree, go to next step. If VSS parameter and speedometer display do not agree, go to step  4 .
  3. Road test vehicle to check speedometer/odometer operation. If system operates normally, problem is intermittent. Check for poor connections or damaged wires. See DIAGNOSING INTERMITTENTS  . Repair or replace if necessary. After repair, go to  5 . If speedometer/odometer do not operate normally, go to next step.
  4. Replace IPC. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION and go to next step.
  5. Road test vehicle to check speedometer/odometer operation. If system operates normally, repair is complete. If problem still exists, return to step  2 .
