Removal ("U" Series)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 16 other vehicles, including the 2001 Pontiac Montana, 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette, 2001 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2001 GMC Sonoma, and 2001 GMC Savana Special. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air bag module, if equipped. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Remove left instrument panel sound insulator. Remove trim panel under steering column.
- Push top of intermediate shaft seal down for access to upper intermediate shaft coupling and upper intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt. Remove upper intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt. Disconnect transaxle shift cable from ball stud. Depress 2 tabs, and remove transaxle shift cable casing from steering column bracket.
- Remove 2 lower steering column support nuts. While supporting column, remove upper column mounting bolts. Lower steering column to seat. Some technical procedures may be performed with column in this position. Disconnect steering column harness connector. Remove steering column. Use screwdriver to spread coupling slightly, if necessary.
