Removal & Installation

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Ensure front wheels face straight ahead. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULES . Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Remove tilt lever by pulling straight out from steering column.
  3. Remove lower steering column cover screws. Remove lower steering column cover. Remove upper steering column cover Torx screw. Remove upper steering column cover. Disconnect SIR coil electrical connectors. Remove SIR coil wire harness straps. Remove retaining ring from steering shaft. See Fig 1. Remove SIR coil assembly.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure SIR coil assembly is centered. See CENTERING SIR COIL ASSEMBLY  under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten steering column cover screws and steering wheel nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system.
