Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. If SIR diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If SIR diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to SIR DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK .
  2. Turn ignition off. Observe AIR BAG warning light when turning ignition on. If AIR BAG warning light remains on, go to next step. If AIR BAG warning light does not remain on, inspect for intermittent or poor connections. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Go to step  18.
  3. Install scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below left instrument panel, to right of steering column. Request SIR DATA display. If ignition voltage is greater than 9 volts, go to next step. If ignition voltage is 9 volts or less, go to step  11.
  4. If voltage is between 9 and 16 volts, go to next step. If voltage is more than 16 volts, inspect battery and charging system. Go to step  18.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM harness connector. Using a small, flat bladed screwdriver, remover retainer assembly from SDM harness connector by carefully lifting locking tabs on end of retainer assembly. If retainer assembly shows signs of corrosion, damage or poor connections, go to next step. If retainer is okay, go to step  7.
  6. Replace retainer assembly using Retainer Kit (12167318). Go to step  18.
  7. If SDM harness connector shows signs of corrosion, poor connections or damage, go to step  16. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  8. Follow instructions in Retainer Kit (12167318) to properly install retainer assembly. Inspect SDM harness connector terminals for damaged or corroded terminals and ensure that shorting bar lifting tab is not damaged, in order to prevent misdiagnosis. If SDM harness connector terminals are damaged or corroded, go to step  16. If SDM harness connector terminals are not damaged or corroded, go to next step.
  9. Connect SDM harness connector to SDM. Ensure Connector Position Assurance (CPA) clip is installed securely. If SDM harness connector does not install properly, go to step  16. If SDM harness connector installs properly, go to next step.
    NOTE: Use Digital Multimeter (J-39200) and Connector Test Adapter Kit (J-35616-A) or Flat Wire Probe Adapter Kit (J-42675) when performing electrical tests.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) connectors. See INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (IPC)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Check AIR BAG warning light control circuit 358 for a short to ground at IPC connector C2, terminal "H". See Fig 1. If short to ground is found and corrected, go to step  18. If short to ground is not found and corrected, go to step  17.
  11. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SDM harness connector. Using a small, flat-blade screwdriver, remover retainer assembly from SDM harness connector by carefully lifting locking tabs on end of retainer assembly. If retainer assembly shows signs of corrosion, damage or poor connections, go to next step. If retainer is okay, go to step  13.
  12. Replace retainer assembly using Retainer Kit (12167318). Go to step  18.
  13. If SDM harness connector for signs of corrosion, poor connections or other damage, go to step  16. If connector is okay, go to next step.
  14. Check ignition voltage feed circuit from battery to SIR fuse for an open, high resistance or short to ground. If condition is found and corrected, go to step  18. If condition is not found and connected, go to next step.
  15. Check SDM ground circuit 1751 for an open or high resistance condition. If open or high resistance is found and corrected, go to step  18. If open or high resistance is not found and corrected, go to step  17.
  16. Replace SDM harness connector. See WIRE REPAIR . Go to step  18.
  17. Replace SDM. See SENSING & DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM)  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Go to next step.
  18. Reconnect all SIR system components. Using scan tool, clear all SIR DTCs. Road test vehicle. If condition is still present, go to step  3. If condition is not present, system is okay.
