Installation Procedure

Remove the engine from the engine stand.
Install the flywheel. Refer to ENGINE FLYWHEEL INSTALLATION .
Install the engine to the vehicle.
NOTE: Refer to FASTENER NOTICE in Cautions and Notices.
Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts (3, 4, 5) and the stud (2).
Tighten

Tighten the bolts (3, 4, 5) and the stud (2) to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).

Remove the engine lifting device.
Install the power steering pump. Refer to POWER STEERING PUMP REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Power Steering System.
Install the radiator inlet hose to the engine. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - INLET (3.1L) in Engine Cooling.
Install the fuel lines to the fuel rail. Refer to FUEL LINE DISCONNECT FITTINGS in Removal & Installation.
Install the brake booster vacuum hose to the upper intake manifold.
Install the vacuum hoses to the upper intake manifold.
Install the heater inlet and outlet hoses to the engine.
Install the accelerator control and the cruise control cable with the bracket to the throttle body.
Raise the vehicle and remove the transaxle support.
Install the radiator outlet hose to the engine. Refer to RADIATOR HOSE REPLACEMENT - OUTLET (3.1L) in Engine Cooling.
Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolt (6) and the stud (1).
Tighten

Tighten the bolt (6) and the stud (1) to 75 N.m (55 lb ft).
Install the transaxle brace. Refer to TRANSAXLE BRACE in Removal & Installation -A/T.
Install the torque converter bolts. Refer to TRANSAXLE (2003) in Removal & Installation - A/T.
Install the A/C compressor. Refer to COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.
Install the starter motor. Refer to STARTER in Starters.
Install the torque converter covers.
Install the engine mount lower nuts.
Tighten

Tighten the nuts to 43 N.m (32 lb ft).
Install the engine wiring harness grounds to the transaxle.
Install the engine wiring harness ground nut to the transaxle stud.
Tighten

Tighten the nut to 35 N.m (26 lb ft).
Install the 3-way catalytic converter pipe to the right exhaust manifold. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (3.1L) in Engine Exhaust.
Lower the vehicle.
Connect the following electrical connectors:
- Body wiring harness-to-engine harness
- Ignition coil
- Idle air control (IAC) valve
- Throttle position (T/P) sensor
- Evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid
- Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve
- Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor
- Heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
- Crankshaft position (CKP) sensor
- Camshaft position (CMP) sensor
- Knock sensor
Install the drive belt. Refer to DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT .
Install the engine mount struts. Refer to ENGINE MOUNT STRUT REPLACEMENT .

Install the hood. Refer to HOOD REPLACEMENT in Body Front End.
Install the air cleaner assembly.
Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE Battery.
Fill the crankcase with engine oil. Refer to ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER REPLACEMENT
Fill cooling system. Refer to DRAINING AND FILLING COOLING SYSTEM in Engine Cooling.
Check and fill the power steering system as necessary. Refer to CHECKING AND ADDING POWER STEERING FLUID in Power Steering System.
Perform a CKP system variation learn procedure. Refer to CKP SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE in Self-Diagnostics -3.1L.
Inspect for leaks.
