Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Buick Century. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the oil pan. Refer to OIL PAN REPLACEMENT  .
  2. Remove the spark plugs from the cylinders that are being serviced. Refer to SPARK PLUGS in Removal & Installation.
  3. Position the connecting rod to be serviced to Bottom Dead Center (BDC) by rotating the crankshaft.
  4. Remove the oil pump bolt.
  5. Remove the oil pump and the oil pump driveshaft.

  6. Remove the crankshaft oil deflector nuts.
  7. Remove the crankshaft oil deflector.

  8. Remove the connecting rod cap nuts.
  9. Remove the connecting rod cap and the lower connecting rod bearing.
    IMPORTANT: Keep the bearings with the original connecting rod and cap. Do this in order to reassemble the connecting rod.

  10. Remove the lower connecting rod bearing from the connecting rod cap.
  11. Install the J 5239  to the connecting rod.
  12. Use the J 5239  to push up the connecting rod and the piston to access the upper connecting rod bearing.
  13. Remove the upper connecting rod bearing.
  14. Wipe the oil from the bearings.
  15. Inspect the connecting rod bearings. Refer to PISTON, CONNECTING ROD, AND BEARINGS CLEANING AND INSPECTION  .
  16. Measure the bearing clearance. Refer to ENGINE MECHANICAL SPECIFICATIONS  .
