Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE DISCONNECT/CONNECT PROCEDURE in Battery.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT (L36)  or DRIVE BELT REPLACEMENT (L67)  .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to JACKING AND LIFTING in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Remove the right engine splash shield retainers and the engine splash shield.
  6. Remove the torque converter covers.

  7. Use the J 37096  to secure the flywheel in order to prevent the crankshaft from rotating.

  8. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and discard the balancer bolt.

    Important:  Do not separate the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft balancer. Service the crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft balancer as an assembly.

  9. Install the J 38197-A  .
  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer.
  11. Remove the J 38197-A  .
