Removal (3.1L & 3.4L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2002 Chevrolet Malibu. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
    NOTE: An eight-digit identification number is stamped on the left hand fuel rail, fueling even cylinders No. 2, 4 and 6. Refer to this number if servicing or part replacement is required.
  1. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  . Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Drain cooling system. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) pipe. Remove the brake vacuum pipe at the plenum.
  2. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and the PCV valve. Remove the electronic ignition coil and module assembly. See IGNITION CONTROL MODULE  . Remove EVAP canister purge solenoid.
  3. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor. Remove throttle cable bracket with cables. Disconnect coolant hoses from throttle body. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Disconnect the injector harness. Remove the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor vacuum line. Disconnect the MAP sensor harness connector. Remove the MAP sensor bolts. Remove the MAP sensor. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
  4. Remove the upper intake manifold bolts. Remove the upper intake manifold and gaskets. Clean the gasket surfaces. Remove the engine compartment fuel pipe retainer bolt. Disconnect the engine fuel feed pipe at the fuel rail. Disconnect the engine fuel return pipe at the fuel pressure regulator.
  5. Remove the fuel feed pipe and fuel return pipe "O" rings and discard. Disconnect the main injector harness electrical connector. To disconnect the connectors from the fuel injectors, pull up the lock release of the fuel injector connector and depress the lock tab. Lift the connector from the injector.
  6. Remove the injector harness from the fuel rail. Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor electrical connector. Remove the fuel rail attaching bolts. Remove the fuel rail assembly. Remove the injector "O" ring seal from the spray tip end of each injector. Discard the seals.
    CAUTION: Use care when servicing the fuel system components, especially the fuel injector electrical connectors, the fuel injector tips, and the injector "O" rings. Plug the inlet and the outlet ports of the fuel rail in order to prevent contamination. Do not use compressed air to clean the fuel rail assembly as this may damage the fuel rail components. To prevent damage to the fuel rail assembly, do not immerse the fuel rail assembly in a solvent bath.
  7. To remove injectors from the fuel rail, remove the fuel injector retainer clip. Remove the fuel injector from the fuel rail. Visually inspect the fuel injector in order to determine if the upper "O" ring was also removed. If the upper "O" ring is not removed, remove the "O" ring from the fuel rail assembly. Remove and discard the fuel injector "O" rings.
