Make sure both the cruise brake switch and stop lamp switches are adjusted properly. Using scan tool, monitor both CRUISE BRAKE SWITCH and BRAKE SWITCH (stop lamp switch) while applying and releasing the brake pedal. The stop lamp switch should normally switch before the cruise brake switch, since the cruise brake switch is located above the stop lamp switch. If one switch input changes, but the other requires too much brake pedal travel to change, indicating it is out of adjustment, see appropriate CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT to adjust switches.

To locate an intermittent problem, use scan tool to monitor CRUISE BRAKE SWITCH and BRAKE SWITCH with ignition on and brake pedal released. Wiggling wires while watching for a change from RELEASED to APPLIED may locate the area where a circuit fault may exist.

If an open in Light Blue wire between the ECM and exterior lamp splice exists, BRAKE SWITCH on scan tool will always read APPLIED.
