Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Attempt to start engine by cranking for 10 seconds while using scan tool to monitor ENGINE SPEED. If RPM is detected, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If RPM is not detected, go to next step.
  2. Turn ignition off. Raise vehicle. Disconnect CKP sensor harness connector. Using a DVOM, measure CKP sensor resistance. If resistance is 800-1200 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 800-1200 ohms, replace CKP sensor.
  3. Set DVOM on AC scale. Measure voltage across CKP sensor while cranking engine. If voltage reading is more than one volt AC, go to next step. If voltage reading is not more than one volt AC, check sensor for correct torque. Tighten sensor to 71 INCH lbs. (9 N.m). If sensor is properly torqued, replace CKP sensor.
  4. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Using DVOM, measure voltage on CKP harness connector terminal No. 1 (Purple/White wire), then on terminal No. 2 (White/Black wire). If voltage reading is 2.5 volts on both circuits, go to step  6 . If voltage reading is not 2.5 volts on both circuits, go to next step.
  5. If voltage on Purple/White wire is more than 4 volts, repair short to voltage in Purple/white wire between CKP sensor and ECM. If voltage on Purple/White wire is not more than 4 volts, check for open in wire that does not have 2.5 volts. If wires are okay, replace ECM.
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector J1. Check for continuity between CKP sensor harness connector terminals No. 1 (Purple/White wire) and No. 2 (White/Black wire). If continuity exists, repair short between circuits. If continuity does not exist, check connector. Repair as necessary. If connectors are okay, replace ECM.
