Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Disconnect knock sensor 1. Start engine. Using scan tool, monitor knock sensor 1 voltage. If voltage is greater than 0.3 volt, go to next step. If voltage is not greater than 0.3 volt, go to step  3 .
  2. Using DVOM, measure voltage on knock sensor 1 connector terminal No. 1 (Dark Blue wire), and then terminal No. 2 (Gray wire). If voltage is greater than one volt on either circuit, repair short to voltage on appropriate wire. If voltage is not greater than one volt on either wire, replace ECM.
  3. Reconnect knock sensor 1. Using scan tool, monitor knock sensor 1 and knock sensor 2 voltages while accelerating engine between idle and fuel cutoff in Park. If knock sensor 1 voltage ever exceeds knock sensor 2 voltage by greater than 1 volt at the same engine speed; or if knock sensor 1 voltage ever exceeds 4 volts, check for cause of excessive mechanical noise like valve train, belt tensioner, loose bracket, low octane fuel or water in fuel. If knock sensor 1 voltage does not ever exceed knock sensor 2 voltage by greater than 1 volt at the same engine speed; or if knock sensor 1 voltage does not ever exceed 4 volts, problem is intermittent.
