Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Turn ignition on, engine off. Using scan tool, monitor ratio control motor circuit A1 status. Does scan tool display OK? If so, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  . If not, go to next step.
  2. If scan tool displays OPEN/SHORT TO GROUND, go to next step. If scan tool displays SHORT TO VOLTS, go to step  9 .
  3. Check PWRTRN fuse (10-amp). Replace fuse and retest if blown. Disconnect transaxle 20-way harness connector. Connect test light between transaxle 20-way harness connector terminals No. 17 and 19. Using scan tool, monitor ratio control motor circuit A1 status. Is the test light blinking? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  5 .
  4. Check loose terminal connections. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  5. Is test light constantly on? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  7 .
  6. Check ratio control motor A1 circuit (5505) for a short to ground. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace TCM. See TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  7. Connect test light between transaxle 20-way harness connector terminal No. 19 and ground. Is test light on? If so, go to next step. If not, repair open in ignition voltage circuit.
  8. Inspect ratio control motor A1 circuit (5505) for an open and loose terminal connections. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace TCM. See TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. Disconnect transaxle 20-way harness connector. Connect test light between transaxle 20-way harness connector terminals No. 17 and 19. Using scan tool, monitor ratio control motor circuit A1 status. Does scan tool display SHORT TO VOLTS? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  11 .
  10. Inspect ratio control motor A1 circuit (5505) for a short to voltage. Repair as necessary. If okay, replace TCM. See TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  11. Faulty ratio control motor. Replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
