Diagnostic Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Allow the vehicle to cool so that the vehicle is not at operating temperature. Drive the vehicle. Using scan tool, monitor transmission fluid temperature. Does transmission fluid temperature change is less than 3.6°F (2°C) in 3 minutes or does transmission fluid temperature change rapidly more than 27°F (15°C) several times? If transmission fluid temperature change is less than 3.6°F (2°C) in 3 minutes, go to next step. If transmission fluid temperature change rapidly more than 27°F (15°C) several times, go to step  5 . If neither condition occurs, problem is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  2. Turn ignition on, engine off. Disconnect transaxle 20-way harness connector. Is reading less than 35°F (-37°C)? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  4 .
  3. TFT sensor is faulty. Replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
  4. Replace TCM. See TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  5. Turn ignition on, engine off. Disconnect transaxle 20-way harness connector. Connect a fixed resistance between transaxle 20-way harness connector terminals No. 13 and 14. Wiggle the harness while monitoring transmission fluid temperature. Did transmission fluid temperature change rapidly more than 27°F (15°C) several times? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  7 .
  6. Inspect TFT high (585) and low (586) circuits for an intermittent open or short condition. Repair as necessary.
  7. TFT sensor is faulty. Replace control solenoid valve assembly. See appropriate AUTOMATIC article in TRANSMISSION SERVICING.
