Installation Procedure
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Aztek and 2004 Buick Rendezvous. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Position the wheel drive shaft to the differential output shaft.
- Carefully align and guide the wheel drive shaft onto the differential output shaft.
- Install the wheel drive shaft fully onto the differential output shaft using light force.
- Verify that the wheel drive shaft is fully seated on the differential output shaft retaining ring by grasping the inner tripot housing and pulling outward. Do not pull on the wheel drive shaft bar.
The wheel drive shaft will remain firmly in place when properly engaged.
- Begin to position the suspension knuckle to the wheel drive shaft.
- Align and carefully guide the wheel drive shaft into the hub and bearing but do not seat fully.
- Position the suspension knuckle to the upper control arm.
- Install the bolt (1) and nut to the upper control arm/suspension knuckle assembly.
Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
- Secure the park brake cable bracket.
- Install the rear tie rod to the rear suspension knuckle.
- Install the tie rod-to-knuckle bolt (2).
Tighten: Tighten the bolt to 85 N.m (63 lb ft).
- Install the brake caliper bracket. Refer to Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement - Rear in Disc Brakes.
- Connect the wheel speed sensor electrical connector.
- Install the park brake cable routing bracket, if removed.
- Install the park brake cable routing bracket nut, if removed.
Tighten: Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).
- Set the park brake.
- Install a NEW wheel drive shaft spindle nut.
- Slowly tighten the nut in order to draw the wheel drive shaft spindle into the wheel hub and bearing.
Tighten: Tighten the wheel drive shaft spindle nut to 260 N.m (192 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Release the park brake.
IMPORTANT:
Support the wheel drive shaft until it is completely installed.
IMPORTANT:
Do not damage the differential output shaft oil seal.
