Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Aztek and 2004 Buick Rendezvous. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (LA1) in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Disconnect the engine right side spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4 L.

  5. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid valve.
  6. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve. Refer to Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.

  7. Remove the ignition module bracket with the coils.
  8. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the engine right side valve rocker arm cover.

    NOTE: Valve rocker arm cover gasket and sealant must be carefully trimmed away from lower intake manifold gasket. Failure to do so will damage the lower intake manifold gasket, causing a severe oil leak.
  9. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
    10. IMPORTANT: When removing the valve rocker arm cover, make sure the gasket stays in place attached to the cylinder head.
  10. Remove the valve rocker. Bump the end of the valve rocker arm cover with the palm of your hand or a soft rubber mallet if the cover adheres to the cylinder head.

  11. Trim the valve cover gasket and sealant away from lower intake manifold gasket at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joints (1).
  12. Remove the valve cover gasket.
  13. Clean the sealing surface on the cylinder head with degreaser.
  14. Clean the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection  in the Engine Unit Repair Manual.
