Diagnostic Procedures
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Pontiac Sunfire, 2002 Pontiac Grand Am, 2002 Oldsmobile Alero, and 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
- Engine at operating temperature. Operate engine at greater than 1200 RPM for 2 minutes. With a scan tool, observe the HO2S voltage parameter. Does the scan tool indicate HO2S voltage varying outside the specified value of 400-500 millivolts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 4.
- Are any powertrain component DTCs set? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to step 5.
- The HO2S 1 has been contaminated. Replace HO2S 1. The contamination source must be removed prior to operating the engine with the replacement HO2S. Possible sources of contamination include the following: The use of a incorrect silicone RTV sealant, engine coolant leakage into combustion chamber, excessive engine oil consumption, use of silicone contaminated fuel, or use of fuel containing lead. When complete, go to step 14.
- Using scan tool, store the DTC information from the PCM. Clear the DTC Information from the PCM. Reset the fuel trim values. Start and idle the engine until the normal operating temperature is reached. Operate the engine under the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Did this DTC Run and Fail This Ignition? If yes, go to step 7. If no, go to next step.
- This DTC is intermittent. Are any additional DTCs stored? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Inspect the exhaust system for leaks between the HO2S 1 and the engine. Repair exhaust system as necessary. Inspect the HO2S 1 and PCM connector for proper terminal contact. Repair connectors as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect HO2S 1 sensor. Jumper the HO2S 1 low signal circuit to a good ground. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Measure the voltage on the HO2S 1 high signal circuit on the PCM side, using a DMM that is connected to a good ground. Does the voltage measure within 351-551 millivolts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 11.
- Turn ignition off. Jumper the HO2S 1 high signal circuit to a ground. Turn ignition on. Use a scan tool in order to monitor the HO2S 1 voltage for the sensor that applies to this DTC. Does the HO2S 1 voltage measure less than 20 millivolts? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 12.
- Inspect for contamination sources that may have caused the HO2S 1 to fail. HO2S 1 contamination sources include improper use of RTV silicone sealant, contaminated fuel, or excessive engine oil or coolant consumption. Repair or remove the source of the contamination. After repairs, go to step 13.
- Repair short between the HO2S 1 high and low signal circuits or between the HO2S 1 high signal circuit and a voltage source. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Inspect the HO2S 1 high signal circuit and the HO2S 1 low signal circuit for an open or high circuit resistance. Repair HO2S 1 circuits as necessary. After repairs, go to step 15.
- Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the HO2S 1. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to next step.
- Replace HO2S 1. When complete, go to next step.
- Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 2.
- With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
NOTE:
If any other DTCs are set except for HO2S DTCs, refer to the other DTCs first before proceeding with this test procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
