Test Description

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2004 Pontiac Aztek and 2004 Buick Rendezvous. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. 3:  Tests for an open in the outside rearview mirror switch ground circuit. If the mirror switch ground circuit is open, turning on the headlamps will remove the alternate ground path through the illumination ground circuit.
  2. 4:  Tests to see if the malfunction is on the switch side of the MSM, or the mirror motor side.
  3. 7:  Tests for a short to ground in the mirror switch or motor control circuits.
  4. 8:  Tests for an open or short to ground in the mirror switch supply voltage circuit.
  5. 10:  Tests for an open or short to ground in the mirror motor.
  6. 11:  Tests for an open or short to ground in the mirror motor assembly.

1 Did you perform the Door System Diagnostic System Check? Go to Step 2  Go to Diagnostic System Check - Door Systems 
2 Verify the power mirrors inoperative fault is present.
Does the power mirrors system operate normally?
Go to Step 3  Go to Step 4 
  1. Turn on the headlamp switch.
  2. Verify the power mirrors inoperative fault is present.
Does the power mirrors system operate normally?
Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems Go to Step 13 
  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn on the ignition, with the engine off.
  3. With a scan tool, command the left and right mirrors Up, Down, Right and Left.
Do the mirrors move Up, Down, Right and Left as commanded?
Go to Step 5  Go to Step 9 
5 Are both power mirrors inoperative? Go to Step 7  Go to Step 6 
6 Is the horizontal function the inoperative mirror function? Go to Step 14  Go to Step 15 
  1. With a scan tool, observe the mirror switch state in the Memory Seat Module data list.
  2. Activate the left and right mirrors to the Up, Down, Left and Right positions
Does the scan tool display Idle?
Go to Step 8  Go to Step 16 
  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the outside rearview mirror switch.
  3. Probe the mirror switch supply voltage circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
Does the test lamp illuminate?
Go to Step 17  Go to Step 18 
9 Is the mirror operation intermittent? Go to Step 19  Go to Step 10

  1. Turn off the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the appropriate outside rearview mirror motor.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the appropriate mirror motor control circuits of the outside rearview mirror motor harness connector.
  4. Activate the outside rearview mirror switch in both directions for the functions being tested.
Does the test lamp illuminate in both directions?
Go to Step 22  Go to Step 11

  1. Connect the appropriate outside rearview mirror motor.
  2. Disconnect the appropriate outside rearview mirror assembly.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the appropriate mirror motor control circuits of the outside rearview mirror motor assembly harness connector.
  4. Activate the outside rearview mirror switch in both directions for the functions being tested.
Does the test lamp illuminate in both directions?
Go to Step 23  Go to Step 12 
12 Is the mirror inoperative in a single direction? Go to Step 20  Go to Step 21 
13 Test the ground circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

14 Test the appropriate mirror switch right signal circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

15 Test the appropriate mirror switch down signal circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

16 Test the appropriate mirror switch signal circuit or mirror motor right/up control circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

17 Test the mirror motor right/up control circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

18 Test the mirror switch supply voltage circuit of the outside rearview mirror switch for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

19 Test the appropriate mirror motor left control circuit of the appropriate mirror motor for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

20 Test the appropriate mirror motor control circuit of the appropriate mirror motor for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

21 Test the appropriate mirror motor control circuit of the appropriate mirror motor for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

22 Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate outside rear view mirror motor. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

23 Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate outside rear view mirror. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

24 Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the outside rearview mirror switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

25 Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the memory seat module. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

26 Replace the outside rear view mirror motor. Refer to Motor Replacement - Power Mirror .

27 Replace the outside rear view mirror assembly. Refer to Mirror Replacement - Power .

28 Replace the outside rear view mirror switch. Refer to Power Mirror Switch Replacement (Aztek)  or Power Mirror Switch Replacement (Rendezvous) .

29 Replace the memory seat module. Refer to Memory Seat Control Module Replacement .
Did you complete the replacement?
Go to Step 30  -
30 Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
