Removal (4.8L, 5.3L & 6.0L Engine)

  1. Turn off all lamps and accessories. Turn ignition off. Disconnect negative battery cable. See Figure .
  2. Raise and suitably support vehicle.
  3. Remove transmission cover bolt. See Fig 1 .
  4. Remove front axle mounting bracket nut. See Fig 2 .
  5. NOTE: Do not remove bolt.
  6. Reposition front axle mounting bracket bolt until bolt tip is flush with support bushing.
  7. Remove starter bolts. See Fig 3 .
  8. Disconnect oil level sensor electrical connector.
  9. Slide starter forward until starter clears transmission.
  10. Remove starter lead nut. See Fig 4 .
  11. Remove starter lead from starter.
  12. Remove positive cable nut. See Fig 5 .
  13. Remove positive cable from starter.
  14. Place starter on a workbench.
  15. If necessary, unsnap transmission cover from starter. See Fig 6 .
  16. If necessary, remove starter heat shield. See Fig 7 .
