Removal Procedure

CAUTION: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed.
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  2. Support the rear axle housing separately. Remove the tires and wheels. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Disconnect the shock absorbers from the axle. Refer to SHOCK ABSORBER REPLACEMENT .
  4. Disconnect the rear propeller shaft from the axle. Refer to PROPELLER SHAFT REPLACEMENT - REAR in Propeller Shaft.

    Secure the propeller shaft up and out of the way in a manner avoiding stress on the universal joints.

  5. Remove the left side park brake cable. Refer to PARKING BRAKE CABLE (LEFT REAR) in Park Brake.
  6. Remove the right side park brake cable. Refer to PARKING BRAKE CABLE (RIGHT REAR) in Park Brake.
  7. Disconnect the brake calipers from the brake caliper brackets. DO NOT disconnect the hydraulic brake flexible hose from the Caliper. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER (REAR) in Disc Brakes.
  8. Disconnect the brake hose junction block from the axle housing. DO NOT disconnect the brake lines or hose from the junction block.
  9. Disconnect the brake pipe/brake hose brackets from the brake backing plates.
  10. Disconnect the brake lines from the axle housing.
  11. Suspend he brake lines and brake hoses from the vehicle using heavy mechanic's wire.
  12. Disconnect the vent hose from the axle housing.
  13. Remove the U-bolts and anchor plates. Refer to LEAF SPRING REPLACEMENT in Rear Suspension.
  14. Lower the axle housing from the vehicle.
