Brakes Drag

  1. Were you sent here from a Brake Symptom List? If so, go to next step. If not, go to GENERAL DIAGNOSIS (HYDRAULIC BRAKES) .
  2. Is vehicle equipped with an adjustable stoplight switch and/or an adjustable cruise control release switch? If so, go to next step. If not, go to step  4.
  3. Inspect stoplight switch for proper adjustment to ensure that brake pedal is fully releasing. Inspect cruise control release switch, if equipped, for proper adjustment to ensure that brake pedal is fully releasing. Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step  11. If not, go to next step.
  4. Inspect parking brake system for proper operation. See GENERAL DIAGNOSIS (PARKING BRAKE) . Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step  11. If not, go to next step.
  5. Inspect disc brake system for proper operation. See GENERAL DIAGNOSIS (DISC BRAKES) . Did you find and correct a condition? If so, go to step  11. If not, go to next step.
  6. Separate the brake booster pushrod from brake pedal. Inspect brake corners to determine if the brake drag condition is still present. Do brake corners still exhibit the brake drag condition? If so, go to step  8. If not, go to next step.
  7. Replace brake pedal assembly. After repairs, go to step  11.
  8. Separate master cylinder from brake booster. Do not disconnect any brake pipes. Inspect brake corners to determine if brake drag condition is still present. Do the brake corners still exhibit the brake drag condition? If so, go to step  10. If not, go to next step.
  9. Replace brake booster assembly. After replacing booster, go to step  11.
  10. Inspect hydraulic brake system for proper operation. See GENERAL DIAGNOSIS (HYDRAULIC BRAKES) . Did you find and correct a condition? If not, go to next step.
  11. Install or connect components that were removed or disconnected during diagnosis. Road test vehicle to confirm proper operation. See BRAKE SYSTEM ROAD TEST . If condition is still present, go to step  2.
