Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 GMC Sierra and 2002 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

  1. Install the backing plate to the axle housing flange
  2. Perform the following procedure before installing the backing plate bolts (15 Series only).
    1. 2.1. Remove all traces of the original adhesive patch
    2. 2.2. Clean the threads of the bolt with brake parts cleaner or the equivalent and allow to dry
    3. 2.3. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) to the threads of the bolt
    NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems
  3. Install the backing plate bolts. Tighten the backing plate bolts to 135 N.m (100 lb ft).
  4. Install the park brake shoe. Refer to PARKING BRAKE SHOE REPLACEMENT (15/25/35 SERIES - EXCEPT RPO NYS - 4-Wheel Steering) 
  5. Install the axle shaft. Refer to REAR AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT (8.6 & 9.5 INCH AXLES) or REAR AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT (9.75 INCH AXLE) in Rear Drive Axle.
  6. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment 
  7. Install the rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Except Dual Wheels or NYS)  or Rear Brake Rotor Replacement (Dual Wheels)

  8. Install the park brake cable to the lever
  9. Perform the following procedure to install the cable to the backing plate:
    1. 9.1. Compress the spring by pushing towards the lever
    2. 9.2. Route the cable through the slot in the backing plate
    3. 9.3. Push the cable housing into the backing plate until the locking tabs snap into place

  10. Tighten the nut to the intermediate cable at the equalizer. Tighten the nut to 3.5 N.m (31 lb in).
  11. Install the tire and wheel assembly
  12. Remove the safety stands
  13. Lower vehicle
  14. Adjust park brake cable. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment
