Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Always Indicates Hot

  1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Compare actual engine temperature with engine coolant temperature gauge reading. If readings are within 30°F of each other, engine coolant temperature gauge is operating properly. Check cooling system. If readings are not within 30°F of each other, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge sender harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If engine coolant temperature gauge indicates cold, replace ECT gauge sensor. If engine coolant temperature gauge does not indicate cold, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Check continuity between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal B9 (Dark Green wire). If continuity does not exist, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If continuity exists, repair short to ground in Dark Green wire.
