Engine Coolant Temperature Gauge Always Indicates Cold

  1. Warm engine to normal operating temperature. Compare actual engine temperature with engine coolant temperature gauge reading. If readings are within 30°F of each other, engine coolant temperature gauge is operating properly. Check cooling system. If readings are not within 30°F of each other, go to next step.
  2. Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) gauge sensor harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a fused jumper wire between ECT gauge sensor Dark Green wire terminal and ground. If engine coolant temperature gauge indicates hot, replace ECT gauge sensor. If engine coolant temperature gauge does not indicate hot, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Check continuity in Dark Green wire between instrument cluster harness connector terminal B9 and ECT gauge sensor harness connector. If continuity exists, replace instrument cluster. See INSTRUMENT CLUSTER  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If continuity does not exist, repair open in Dark Green wire.
