Removal & Installation

  1. Before proceeding, see AIR BAG SAFETY PRECAUTIONS . Position vehicle with front wheels pointed straight ahead and steering wheel centered. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM .
  2. Remove driver-side air bag module. See AIR BAG MODULES . Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL . Remove screws from lower steering column cover. Remove upper and lower steering column covers. Remove ignition switch bezel.
  3. Remove SIR coil assembly rosebud-type fastener from bracket below steering column. Disconnect horn/cruise connector under steering column. Remove SIR coil assembly. See Fig 1.
  4. To install, reverse removal procedure. If necessary, center SIR coil assembly. See CENTERING SIR COIL ASSEMBLY  under ADJUSTMENTS. Tighten steering wheel nut and lower steering column cover screws to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Activate air bag system.
