Test 11: Tachometer Inoperative: Diesel

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Disconnect generator harness connector. Connect test light between ground and White wire terminal at generator harness connector. If test light illuminates, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate, go to step  3.
  2. Repair short to ground in White wire between instrument cluster and generator.
  3. Check continuity in White wire between terminal No. 6 at instrument cluster harness connector and generator harness connector. See Figure. If continuity exists, go to next step. If continuity does not exist, go to step  5.
  4. Connect generator harness connector. Start engine. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (White wire) at instrument cluster harness connector. Voltage should pulsate at or below 14 volts. If voltage is as specified, go to step  6. If voltage is not as specified, go to step  7.
  5. Repair open in White wire between instrument cluster and generator.
  6. Replace instrument cluster.
  7. Replace generator.
