Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 1998 GMC Savana Special, 1998 GMC Savana Camper Special, 1998 GMC Savana, 1998 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 1998 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. DO NOT start engine. Using scan tool, record freeze frame and failure records for reference. Data will be lost when DTCs are cleared later in this test.
  2. Drive vehicle in "D3" in 3rd gear. Record data using scan tool in snapshot mode. If TCC snapshot data is more than 65 RPM when TCC PWM solenoid is commanded on (more than 95 percent) for more than 4 seconds, go to next step. If TCC snapshot data is less than 65 RPM when TCC PWM solenoid is commanded on (more than 95 percent) for more than 4 seconds, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
  3. Check TCC PWM solenoid for mechanical failure. Solenoid may be stuck off. Repair as necessary, then go to step 5). If TCC PWM solenoid is okay, go to next step.
  4. Check for torque converter clutch mechanical failure. TCC is mechanically stuck off. Inspect TCC for a damaged or clogged exhaust orifice, converter clutch apply valve stuck in release position, misaligned or damaged valve body gasket, or a restricted apply or release passage. Repair component as necessary, then go to next step.
  5. After repair is complete, select DTC on scan tool. Select "Clear Info" function. Drive vehicle in "D3" with steady acceleration and throttle angle more than 12 percent. VCM must detect a TCC slip speed of less than 20 RPM for one second. Select "Specific DTC" and enter DTC "P0741". If DTC P0741 is not present, repair is complete. If DTC P0741 is still present, repeat test.
