Diagnostic Procedures

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 1998 GMC Savana Special, 1998 GMC Savana Camper Special, 1998 GMC Savana, 1998 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 1998 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. DO NOT start engine. Using scan tool, record freeze frame and failure records for reference. Data will be lost when DTCs are cleared later in this test.
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect input speed sensor connector. Connect a DVOM set to AC volts, to input speed sensor terminals. With vehicle in Park and engine running, read input speed sensor voltage. If voltage is less than .5 volt, replace input speed sensor, then go to step 5). If voltage is more than .5 volt, check for open or short to ground in input speed sensor circuits. See procedures in WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair circuit(s) as necessary, then go to step 5). If circuits are okay, go to next step.
  3. Reconnect input speed sensor connector. Disconnect appropriate VCM connector for input speed sensor circuits. See procedures in WIRING DIAGRAMS . Remove fuel pump relay. Using a DVOM, measure voltage of input speed sensor circuits at appropriate VCM connector terminals while cranking engine. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . If voltage is more than .5 volt, go to next step. If voltage is less than .5 volt, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
  4. Check for intermittent condition. Check VCM and connector for damaged or backed out terminals, weak terminal tension and poor connections. Repair as necessary, then go to next step. If terminals and connections are okay, replace VCM, then go to next step.
  5. After repair is complete, select DTC on scan tool. Select "Clear Info" function. Select "Specific DTC" and enter DTC "P0716". Start engine and increase speed to more than 1000 RPM. VCM must detect an input speed change of less than 1000 RPM for one second. If DTC P0716 is not present, repair is complete. If DTC P0716 is still present, repeat test.
