Diagnostic Procedure
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 1998 GMC Savana Special, 1998 GMC Savana Camper Special, 1998 GMC Savana, 1998 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 1998 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Ensure transmission fluid level is correct. Connect scan tool to DLC. Turn ignition switch to ON position. DO NOT start engine. Using scan tool, record freeze frame and failure records for reference. Data will be lost when DTCs are cleared later in this test.
- Select "TFT" on scan tool. Drive vehicle and observe scan tool for either of the following conditions: TFT does not change, or TFT changes more than 36°F (20°C) 14 times in 7 seconds. If either of these conditions occurred, go to next step. If neither of these conditions occurred, cause is intermittent. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS.
- Record scan tool TFT reading. If scan tool does not display an unrealistic (out of range) TFT change, go to next step. If scan tool displays an unrealistic (out of range) TFT change, turn ignition off. Disconnect transmission 20-pin connector. Connect a test light between terminals "L" and "M" on VCM side of transmission 20-pin connector. See Figure. Turn ignition on. If scan tool displays an unrealistic (out of range) TFT change, replace VCM, then go to step 5). If scan tool does not display an unrealistic (out of range) TFT change, replace TFT sensor, then go to step 5).
- Record scan tool TFT display from previous step. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transmission 20-pin connector. Turn ignition on. If scan tool TFT reading is the same as in previous step, replace VCM, then go to next step. If scan tool TFT reading is not the same as in previous step, replace TFT sensor, then go to next step.
- After repair is complete, select DTC on scan tool. Select "Clear Info" function. Select "Specific DTC" and enter DTC "P0711". Road test vehicle. Monitor transmission fluid temperature. Ensure fluid temperature changes by more than 5°F (3°C) after engine has been running for 35 seconds. Ensure fluid temperature does not change by more than 36°F (20°C) within .2 second for a period of at least 11 seconds. If DTC P0711 is not present, repair is complete. If DTC P0711 is still present, repeat test.
