Installation (7.4L - 1998)
Clean gasket surfaces, bolt threads and bolt holes. Position NEW head gasket on cylinder block. Ensure all holes align. Coat NEW head bolt threads with GM Sealant (1052080). Install cylinder head with bolts finger-tight. Tighten head bolts in sequence to specification. in 4 passes. On first pass, tighten all bolts to 30 ft. lbs (40 N.m). On second pass, tighten to 60 ft. lbs. (80 N.m). On the third pass, tighten all long bolts (1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16) in sequence to 92 ft. lbs. (125 N.m). On the final pass, tighten all short bolts (4, 5, 10 and 11) in sequence to 89 ft. lbs. (120 N.m). See Fig 1. Lubricate the valve tip, rocker arm pivot and push rod socket with a high viscosity oil containing Zinc (1052367) or equivalent. To complete cylinder head installation, reverse removal procedure.
