Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform Powertrain ON-BOARD DIAGNOSTIC (OBD) SYSTEM CHECK. See the BASIC TESTING article. Then go to next step.
  2. Check if DTC P0219 is set. If DTC P0219 is set, go to DTC P0219 test. If DTC P0219 is not set, go to next step.
  3. Check if engine starts. If engine starts, go to next step. If engine does not start, go to step 7).
  4. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Using scan tool, observe injection pump closure time. If scan tool displays injection pump closure time at less than .75 millisecond, go to next step. If scan tool displays injection pump closure time at greater than .75 millisecond, go to step 6).
  5. With engine running, observe injection pump closure time on scan tool. If scan tool displays injection pump closure time as 0.0 milliseconds, go to step 8). If scan tool does not display injection pump closure time as 0.0 millisecond, go to step 10).
  6. DTC is intermittent. If no additional DTCs are set, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS. If any additional DTCs are set, go to applicable DTC test.
  7. Check for open in closure ground circuit. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12).
  8. Check for open or short to ground in closure signal circuit. Repair as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12). If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  9. Check for poor connection at closure signal terminal of PCM. Repair terminal as necessary. After repairs, go to step 12). If terminal connection is okay, go to next step.
  10. Replace fuel injection pump. If fuel injection pump is replaced, new pump must be timed. See the ADJUSTMENTS article. After replacing injection pump, go to step 12).
  11. Replace PCM. After replacing PCM, go to next step.
  12. Using scan tool, select DTC, CLEAR INFO. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Select DTC, SPECIFIC, then enter DTC P1216. Operate vehicle within the conditions for setting this DTC. If scan tool indicates that this test ran and passed, go to next step. If scan tool does not indicate that this test ran and passed, repeat step 2).
  13. Using scan tool, select CAPTURE INFO, REVIEW INFO. If any undiagnosed DTC(s) are displayed, go to applicable DTC test.
