Fuel Gauge Is Inaccurate

  1. With known amount of fuel in tank, check gauge readings. If gauge reads significantly different than known amount, go to next step. If gauge is reasonably accurate, system is okay.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Disconnect fuel pump and sender harness connector (gasoline engine) or fuel level sender harness connector (diesel engine) on top of fuel tank. Using Tester (J-33431-B), connect Red tester lead to Purple wire terminal of harness connector and other lead to ground. Set dial to zero ohms. Slowly rotate dial to 90 ohms. If fuel gauge reads EMPTY, then FULL, go to next step. If gauge does not respond, go to step 4).
  3. Jumper leads of tester between Purple and Black/White wire terminals of fuel sender harness connector. Set dial to zero ohms. Slowly rotate dial to 90 ohms. If fuel gauge reads EMPTY, then FULL, replace fuel pump and sender (gasoline engines) or fuel level sender (diesel engines). If gauge does not read EMPTY, then FULL, repair Black/White wire.
  4. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Connect two fused jumper wires between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminals B17 (Pink wire) and B13 (Black/White wire). Using Tester (J-33431-B), connect Red tester lead to instrument cluster harness connector terminal B2, and other lead to ground. Set dial to zero ohms. Slowly rotate dial to 90 ohms. If fuel gauge reads EMPTY, then FULL, repair Purple wire between instrument cluster and fuel sender. If gauge does not respond, replace instrument cluster.
