Fuel Gauge Always Reads Full

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 1997 GMC Savana Special, 1997 GMC Savana Camper Special, 1997 GMC Savana, 1997 Chevrolet RV Cutaway, and 1997 Chevrolet Cutaway. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect fuel pump and sender harness connector (gasoline engine) or fuel level sender harness connector (diesel engine) on top of fuel tank. Connect self-powered test light ground and Black wire terminal (Gasoline engine) or Black/White wire (Diesel engine) at sender harness connector. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Black or Black/White wire.
  2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and Purple wire terminal at fuel sender harness connector. If fuel gauge does not indicate empty, go to next step on diesel engines, or go to step 4) on gasoline engines. If fuel gauge indicates empty, replace fuel sender.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. B2 (Pink wire). Connect self-powered test light between ground and fuel sender harness connector Purple wire terminal. If test light lights, replace instrument cluster. If test light does not light, repair open in Purple wire.
  4. Disconnect fuel sender buffer module harness connector. Connect self-powered test light between fuel sender buffer harness connector Purple wire terminal and instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. B2 (Purple wire). If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Purple wire.
  5. Connect self-powered test light between fuel sender buffer harness connector Purple wire terminal and fuel pump sender harness connector Purple wire terminal. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Purple wire.
  6. Connect non-powered test light between fuel sender buffer harness connector Pink wire terminal and ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Pink wire.
  7. Using a voltmeter, measure voltage between fuel sender buffer harness connector Gray wire terminal and ground. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If voltage is less than 1.5 volts, repair open in Gray wire. If voltage is more than 1.5 volts, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Control Module (VCM) harness connector C4. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Connect self-powered test light between VCM harness connector Gray wire terminal and fuel sender buffer harness connector Gray wire terminal. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Gray wire.
  9. Connect self-powered test light between VCM harness connector Black/White wire terminal and fuel sender buffer harness connector Black/White wire terminal. If test light lights, replace fuel sender buffer module. If test light does not light, repair open in Black/White wire.
