Fuel Gauge Always Reads Empty

  1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Disconnect fuel pump and sender harness connector (gasoline engine) or fuel level sender harness connector (diesel engine) on top of fuel tank. If fuel gauge does not indicate EMPTY, replace fuel pump and sender (gasoline engine) or fuel level sender (diesel engine). If gauge indicates EMPTY, go to next step for diesel engines, or step 3) for gasoline engines.
  2. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Connect self-powered test light between harness connector terminal B2 (Purple wire) and ground. See Figure . If test light does not light, replace instrument cluster. If test light lights, repair Purple wire.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster harness connector. Connect test light between harness connector terminal B2 (Purple wire) and ground. If test light does not light, replace instrument cluster. If test light lights, go to next step.
  4. Disconnect fuel sender buffer module harness connector located below right side of instrument panel. Connect self-powered test light between instrument cluster harness connector terminal No. B2 (Purple wire) and ground. If test light does not light, go to next step. If test light lights, repair short to ground in Purple wire.
  5. Connect self-powered test light between fuel sender buffer module connector terminal No. "C" (Purple wire) and ground. See Fig 1 . If test light does not light, go to next step. If test light lights, repair short to ground in Purple wire.

  6. Connect non-powered test light between fuel sender buffer module connector terminal No. "A" (Pink wire) and ground. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Pink wire.
  7. Using voltmeter, measure voltage between fuel sender buffer module connector terminal No. "B" (Gray wire) and ground. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If voltage is 1.5 volts or more, go to next step. If voltage is 1.5 volts or less, repair open in Gray wire.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Vehicle Control Module (VCM) harness connector, located in engine compartment on left fender. Connect self-powered test light between VCM connector Gray wire terminal and fuel sender buffer module connector terminal No. "D". See Fig 1 . If test light lights, go to next step. If test light does not light, repair open in Gray wire.
  9. Connect self-powered test light between VCM connector Black/White wire terminal and fuel sender buffer module connector terminal No. "M". If test light lights, replace fuel sender buffer module. If test light does not light, repair open in Black/White wire.
