Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is a permanent-magnet signal generator located in transmission tailshaft housing. A toothed rotor is mounted on tailshaft. Rotor teeth revolve past VSS sensor, producing pulses which are sent to VSS buffer for processing, then to PCM, speedometer and cruise control (if equipped).
