Tachometer Does Not Function (Diesel)

  1. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Disconnect generator connector. Connect a self-powered test light between generator connector terminal "A" (White wire) and ground. If test light does not come on, go to next step. If test light comes on, repair short to ground in White wire.
  2. Connect self-powered test light between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 6 and generator connector terminal "A" (White wire). See Figure . If test light comes on, go to next step. If test light does not come on, repair open circuit in White wire.
  3. Reconnect generator connector. Start engine. Connect voltmeter between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 6 (White wire) and ground. Check for pulsating voltage at or below 14 volts. If voltage is present, replace instrument cluster. If voltage is not present, replace generator.
