Fuel Gauge Inaccurate (Single Tank 4.3L)

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel pump and sender connector. Connect one Red lead of Instrument Panel Tester (J33431-B) to fuel pump and sender connector terminal "A" (Pink wire). Connect other Red lead to ground.
  2. Turn ignition on. Set resistance dial to zero ohms. Fuel gauge should indicate "E" or less. Set resistance to 250 ohms. After a short period, gauge should indicate "F" or greater. If fuel gauge operates as specified, go to step  5 . If fuel gauge does not operate as specified, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Connect fused jumper wire between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 22 (Pink wire) and voltage. See Figure . Install another fused jumper wire between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 31 (Black wire) and ground. Connect one Red lead of instrument panel tester to instrument cluster connector terminal No. 16 (Purple wire). Connect other Red lead to ground.
  4. Turn ignition on. Set resistance dial to zero ohms. Fuel gauge should indicate "E" or less. Set resistance to 250 ohms. After a short period, gauge should indicate "F" or greater. If fuel gauge does operate as specified, go to step  6 . If fuel gauge does not operate as specified, replace instrument cluster.
  5. Turn ignition off. Reconnect instrument panel tester between fuel pump and sender connector terminal "A" (Pink wire) and "B" (Gray wire). Retest at zero and 250 ohms. If fuel gauge does operate as specified, replace fuel pump and sender. If fuel gauge does not operate as specified, locate and repair high resistance in Black wire between fuel gauge sender and Vehicle Control Module (VCM).
  6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect fuel tank sender module connector. Connect instrument panel tester between fuel tank sender module connector terminal "L" (Purple wire) and ground. Retest at zero and 250 ohms. If fuel gauge does operate as specified in step  4 , replace fuel tank sender module. If fuel gauge does not operate as specified, locate and repair high resistance in Purple wire between fuel tank sender module and instrument cluster.
