Crankshaft & Main Bearings

  1. Mark main bearing caps in relation to cylinder block. Measure main bearing journal diameter, out-of-round and taper. Determine main bearing oil clearance.
  2. If measurement is not within the proper specification, replace the main bearings. DO NOT  machine the crankshaft. See CRANKSHAFT, MAIN & CONNECTING ROD BEARINGS  table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
CAUTION: Crankshaft is a rolled fillet type. DO NOT  machine crankshaft. Main bearings are select fit to bearing bores in block. Match bearing shells to number (1, 2 or 3) stamped near oil pan rail and color (Blue  , Orange  or White) painted on crankshaft journals.
  3. Apply a thin film of RTV to crankshaft seal area of rear main bearing cap. Lightly oil cap bolt threads. Tap rear main bearing cap into place with brass or leather mallet. Install cap bolts and tighten slightly. Align thrust bearing surfaces and measure crankshaft end play. See Thrust Bearing.
