Timing Chain Free Play

  1. Position dial indicator on front of cylinder block with dial indicator tip in contact with center of timing chain between sprockets. Pull chain away from crankshaft and adjust dial indicator to zero.
  2. Push chain toward crankshaft and note indicator reading. If chain deflection exceeds .80" (20.3 mm) on used parts or .50" (12.7 mm) on new parts, replace chain. Replace sprockets if worn.
