Upper Control Arm: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 14 other vehicles, including the 1993 Oldsmobile Bravada, 1993 GMC Yukon, 1993 GMC Suburban, 1993 GMC Sonoma, and 1993 GMC Safari. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Raise and support vehicle under lower control arms. Remove wheel and tire assembly. On Astro, "K" Series Blazer & Pickup, Safari, Sierra, Suburban and Yukon, disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner extension (if necessary). Remove brakeline and brackets from upper control arm.
  2. On all models, remove upper ball joint stud cotter pin. On Bravada, Jimmy, Sonoma, Typhoon and "T" Series Blazer & Pickup, place Ball Joint Separator (J-34026 ) over upper ball joint stud. Loosen ball joint stud nut. See Figure . Back off nut until nut contacts tool. Continue backing off nut until nut forces ball stud out of steering knuckle. Remove spacer.
  3. On Astro, "K" Series Blazer & Pickup, Safari, Sierra, Suburban and Yukon, remove upper ball joint stud nut and separate upper ball joint stud from steering knuckle using Ball Joint Separator (J-36607 ).
  4. On all models, mark alignment adjustment cams for reassembly reference. Remove upper control arm pivot bolts, cams/washers and nuts. Remove upper control arm from vehicle. See Figure and Figure . Replace bushings and/or bumper as necessary.
