Fuel Gauge Inoperative Or Inaccurate

  1. Disconnect fuel sender. Connect Gauge Tester (J24538-A) to sender wire and ground. Turn ignition on. If gauge responds okay, check fuel sender wires for shorts and connector for loose terminals.
  2. Repair wires and connector as necessary. If wires and connector are okay, replace fuel sender. If gauge does not respond correctly, disconnect front body connector. Connect Gauge Tester (J24538-A) to fuel gauge wire in body connector.
  3. With gauge tester set at 90 ohms, fuel gauge should read 1/4 to1/2. If reading is correct, check wiring to fuel sender for loose connections and chaffed insulation. Repair as necessary. If reading is incorrect, remove fuel gauge and check for loose terminal nuts.
  4. Tighten nuts as necessary. If gauge connections are tight, replace fuel gauge. If gauge does not respond to 90 ohm application, disconnect front body connector. Connect Gauge Tester (J24538-A) to fuel gauge wire in body connector.
  5. If gauge responds okay, check wiring between fuel sender and body connector. Repair as necessary. If gauge does not respond, remove gauge and check for loose or open connections at gauge terminals.
  6. Check for loose instrument cluster connector. Repair connections as necessary. If connections are okay, replace fuel gauge.
