Pinion Flange & Pinion Seal: Installation
- Inspect pinion flange oil seal surface, drive splines, flange ears and bearing contact surface. Replace pinion flange if damaged. Thoroughly clean machined surfaces. Lubricate inside diameter of seal. Place pinion seal in housing bore.
- Using Pinion Seal Installer (J-24384 ), drive oil seal into position in housing bore until flush with housing. Install a non-hardening sealer to pinion splines or to internal splines of pinion flange. Install flange on pinion shaft, aligning scribe marks made previously. If required, use only "soft" faced (rubber) hammer to tap flange onto pinion.
- Install washer (if equipped) and self-locking nut to pinion, and snug tighten. Using companion flange holder and remover, hold pinion flange and tighten pinion nut. Take note of scribe alignment marks and number of exposed threads.
- If scribe alignment marks are exceeded when tightening nut, remove pinion and install NEW collapsible sleeve. Install drive shaft. Add gear oil as needed.
