The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) is designed to work in conjunction with seat belts. Dakota is equipped with a driver-side air bag only. SRS provides increased accident protection for driver by deploying air bags in a front-end collision. The air bag(s) deploy in about 1/10th of a second after front impact sensors close.

System consists of an AIR BAG warning light, clockspring, driver-side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module, Air Bag Control Module (ACM) and impact sensor(s). The ACM monitors system, stores fault codes (messages), and provides information to AIR BAG warning light and ACM data link connector. A fault code is stored when AIR BAG warning light is activated for more than 10 seconds.

The deceleration resulting from the impact of a front-end collision causes a switch inside ACM safing sensor to close. As soon as one front impact sensor and safing sensor switch closes, an electrical charge is sent from ACM to air bag module(s). This causes inflator(s) to be actuated, producing a large quantity of nitrogen gas and inflating the air bag(s).
